A Community Effort to Revive Nature in Morgans Valley
Following the 2010 Christchurch Earthquake, a significant portion of Morgans Valley, located on the eastern side of Heathcote in the Christchurch Port Hills, was red-zoned due to the risk of rockfall. Ten years later, the Morgans Valley Bird and Bush Regeneration Project was born. This initiative is led by a group of five passionate residents, who, together with numerous dedicated community volunteers, are transforming the red-zoned rockfall area. The group has been planting native vegetation to restore the natural landscape and support local wildlife
Today, with approximately 2,500 plants already in the ground, the project is in full swing, regenerating native bush, and increasing biodiversity by attracting native birdlife.
The project is supported by the City Council, the local community, and the generous sponsorship of Online Distribution. Their support has been instrumental in advancing the initiative and ensuring its long-term success. It is a beautiful example of how collaboration can result in a lasting, positive impact on the environment.
One of the key highlights of this journey was Online Distribution’s dedicated planting day, which truly marked a turning point for the project.
“We could not have asked for better weather, and we had a group of about 20-25 volunteers. Overall, we managed to plant 350 plants, and it was an inspiring day for everyone involved. We couldn’t have done this without the support of Online Distribution and their kind sponsorship of this project.”
As the project progresses, the team is excited to see how their efforts will transform the area into a vibrant natural asset for future generations.
