Weather Event

As reported in the media, the Upper South Island and Lower North Island are currently experiencing a severe weather event.  As a result, Cook Strait sailings were suspended last night until further notice.
Additionally, alternative Upper South Island roads are currently closed due to slips, blocking all access routes between Christchurch and the Upper South Island, as listed:

  • SH65 – Murchison to Springs Junction closed
  • SH7   – Lewis Pass closed due to slips and flooding
  • SH73 – Arthur’s Pass closed due to slips
  • SH73 – Otira closed due to flooding and fallen trees

The Wellington region is experiencing extreme winds, in places exceeding 150km, coupled with heavy rain which is impeding normal services.  The airport is closed and warnings remain in place to limit travel.
Freight movements to the Upper South Island and West Coast regions, and all inter-Island (between Island) shipments transiting through the Cook Strait corridor can expect delays due to this current weather event.
